History
It all started with
The concept of Planetary Service was first coined in 2018 by Rembert Biemond, who explored the idea through conversations and collaborations. After receiving initial support from the board of the Swiss foundation Evidenz, the vision gained real momentum in early 2022.
The spark came from an inspiring editorial in the YIP Network Newsletter, which posed a bold question: What if, instead of mandatory military service, young people could choose a voluntary Planetary Service — a commitment to the Earth and humanity?
Today, we are a growing community united by a shared vision: reimagining service as a force for planetary regeneration and collective well-being.
Vision
Planetary Service envisions a world where caring for the Earth becomes a shared cultural norm—freely chosen, rooted in community, and a powerful source of learning and transformation.
We believe that meaningful, voluntary action can restore ecosystems, renew our ways of living, and reconnect us with each other and the Earth.
Mission
To make acts of planetary service visible, supported, and impactful — by building a shared framework of learning, recognition, and collaboration around work that protects planetary boundaries. We advance Planetary Service as a pathway for:
- Restoring Earth’s life-sustaining systems (Planet)
- Nurturing personal purpose, learning, and resilience (Self)
- Reshaping social norms toward care, equity, and shared responsibility (Society)
We do this by:
- Creating learning frameworks and mentoring spaces to reflect and grow through service
- Enabling individuals and communities to take voluntary, regenerative action
- Uplifting and recognising ecological care work, especially informal and under-recognised efforts
- Advocating for structures — policies, funding, and language — that make service visible and viable for all

Innovative Solutions for Growth
For now we are under the legal and economic umbrella of Evidenz Foundation and figure as one of their projects. Yet our intention is to become an organisation to act as an independent body to carry Planetary Service. This would ensure that Planetary Service is a neutral body, which can create diverse international partnerships.
